Kilo-What?

http://www.southerncompany.com/learningpower/whats_electricity.aspx

Description

This resource provides an introduction to electricity and power plants. Of particular interest are the flash animations of three types of power plants (hydro, nuclear, and fossil fuel) that can be accessed on the left-hand side of the page. Students should scroll over the animations to read the descriptions of the systems involved in creating electricity at the different power plants.

Using the Resource

This resource could focus student attention on the fact that electricity is a secondary form of energy that is generated at a power plant. To introduce the resource, engage students in a discussion about the different energy sources and ask them to talk about how they think these power sources are converted to energy that we can use. Try to elicit what students already know and might think about energy and how it can be converted into electricity.
