Virtual Tide Pool
http://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/edgeofsea/tidepool.html

Description
Virtual Tide Pool features a three dimensional view of a tide pool during both low and high tides. Students can see animals that live under, above, and at the water’s surface. This site offers the ability to pan the tide pool for a 360 degree view, with zoom options, and gives descriptions of the animals found during both low and high tides.

Using the Resource
Have students explore the tide pool during low and high tide. They can see the photographs and read about each animal they see as they zoom in and out of the panoramic view. Lead discussions that encourage students to consider how these animals’ bodies enable them to live in this tide pool environment. Students can make their own illustrations of the external features that make these animals adapt to this environment. Students can use the zooming option of this site for a magnified view of the animals. Encourage students to explore tide pools in more detail by providing books about this type of environment. Ask them questions about how this environment offers these animals what they need. After charting some of their ideas and questions, they can gather more information by looking through books.
